Our friends, George and Nancy, went with us this year. This was probably
the best one yet in the 35 years of the race. Weather could not have
been more perfect. With temps near 70, light and variable winds, the
balloons stayed in the immediate area of the launch field as each flight
took off. When the last balloon lifted off the "Hare" balloon, the
Energizer Bunny, was still in sight. In fact it only made it 2 miles
before setting down. Had several neat connections at this year's race.
My old schoolmate, Roy Caton, was piloting the United Van Lines truck
balloon and Nancy works for Uni Group that runs United Van Lines! Roy's
brother and sort of my ex brother-in-law, Tom Caton, was piloting the
Daniel and Henry balloon which is where Maureen's sister works as an
underwriter. I have both flown with Tom and crewed at the race. The
pilot in the Mayflower balloon, the eventual winner and also owned by Uni
Group, was from North Carolina where my daughter and her family live.
