A whole gaggle of us race fans flew to Dallas, Texas last Friday to see the Busch and Nextel Cup races at Texas Motor Speedway just outside of Dallas. Connie's cousin Cynthia and her husband Archie (who also go to St. Pete Beach with us every October) graciously invited us into their home for the weekend. Not only did they let the TWELVE of us stay in their brand new 5 bedroom home, they didn't go to the races but stayed home and cooked for us each day! Talk about some friends! They had just moved into the house 4 days prior to us arriving. Connie, Craig, Bob, Janet, Maureen and myself flew down Friday and picked up a 15 passenger van which immediately became known as the "OATS Bus" to haul everyone around. After the Busch Race on Saturday we picked up Bob's son Paul, his wife Lynn and their friends Joe & Maggie at the airport. Having never driven in Dallas I was the designated driver all weekend and thanks to my excellent Navigator, Mike, we got everywhere we were headed with no muss, no fuss. (Although Bob kept calling Mike the "Agigator") Sunday found us headed to the Texas Motor Speedway about 8:15 AM for the 1:00 PM race because we thought we would be stuck in traffic for a couple of hours. But, with Mike's excellent navigational skills, Bob's insistence on not following the directions we had from the Speedway, we got there in no time flat and no traffic. Although we did drive around about 6 miles of cars stopped on the Interstate waiting to take the exit Mike and I thought was the right one. Turns out we weren't parking in the "Blue Express" lot like Bob had told us but in the "VIP Express" lot. Seems the Blue colored parking pass confused him. The race weather Sunday was all sunshine and eighty degrees plus, unlike Saturday where we had strong winds and coolish temps. When we got ready to leave again between Bob & Mike they pointed me in the right direction and we only had about a mile of traffic and then clear sailling all the way back to Lewisville Lake. Great friends, great weather, great racing - all in all a great weekend! Oh, by the way, Kurt Busch won the Busch race and Kasey Kahne won the Nextel Cup race, like that mattered to us. Missouri boy and fan favorite Carl Edwards blew an engine Saturday and crashed on Sunday, maybe next time. A big Texas size "THANK YOU" to Cynthia and Archie for the amazing hospitality!!!!!!
